Thanks Poppy
Today Rachel and I delivered the fresh, never frozen, hormone and antibiotic free, free-range, certified humane turkey to her Nanny and Poppy's house (that's grandma and grandpa to the rest of the gentiles out there). The ordeal surrounding the turkey is a topic all on it's own- maybe I will blog about it at a later date.
Anyway, we were hanging out with Poppy, enjoying his usual editorial commentary on the little things in life, when I asked him: "Poppy, what is your favorite Thanksgiving food?" Poppy paused. He always has a quick and witty response to questions, despite his 90 + years on this earth- but he clearly wanted to give this one some thought. He loves to eat. He loves food. So this was a tough one.
Finally, he leaned forward a little in his chair and said, "You're going to think I'm crazy". I said, "No, I won't." He said, "Beef stew". Really? Why hasn't anyone made you beef stew if it's your favorite? he replies, "because I like it".
This is probably true. All the ladies in his life- wife, three daughters, three granddaughters- don't slow down to ask Poppy what he wants. Poppy goes on to elaborate on all the virtues of beef stew- how it has all your favorite foods in it, how it can feed you for days, and how you can get all of that for 7 or 8 bucks, and so on and so forth.
Not wanting to disappoint- and to make up for the fact that I have the audacity to bring a ham to a Jewish household for Thanksgiving just because I want it- I google a recipe for beef stew. I go to the store and pick up all of the ingredients. The 8 buck thing is a fallacy- the bay leaves alone were 8 bucks, and with all of the other ingredients I had to buy, this shopping trip set me back more like 50 bucks. But Poppy is always entertaining and has been more than wonderful for letting me be a part of his family. So, Poppy, here's to you and beef stew for Thanksgiving. I hope you like it. I'm sure you'll tell me if you don't.
